This letter opener is in the shape of a mace head decorated with a double ibex figurine. Flanking the ibexes are two tools. The original object is from the Chalcolithic period, some 6,000 years ago. It is one of the hundreds of cast copper mace heads and scepters discovered in the Cave of the Treasure, wrapped in a mat.
In antiquity, maces were an important weapon of war. However, this magnificent mace head, like the others found with it, probably carried symbolic meaning and was used in ritual ceremonies.
